Alex Van Helsing Vampire Rising
Van Helsing Vampire Hunter
Vampire Book review 'Alex Van Helsing Vampire Rising' by Jason Henderson. Action packed Van Helsing book centered around 14 year old vampire hunter.
Being a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, my ears usually perk up when I come across anything vampire slayer / vampire hunter related.
Such was the case when I came across the new Jason Henderson book Alex Van Helsing Vampire Rising about a fourteen year old boy vampire hunter.
Now granted, a fourteen year old boy vampire hunter is not quite the same as a sixteen year old girl vampire slayer but my curiosity peaked and I wanted to find out if the Van Helsing vampire hunter could hold his own.
Tie in the fact that this vampire book is about a Van Helsing and now I am doubly curious.
Straight out of the gate this Van Helsing book grabs your attention. Alex Van Helsing, the books main character, has a run in with a mean vamp almost immediately and let's you know this vampire book is not for the faint of heart.
There are some passages of the book that are real page turners and leave you anticipating the outcome with adrenalin rushing delight.
The dialog is witty and the characters are enjoyable. The Alex Van Helsing character in Vampire Rising is as likable and relatable as Harry Potter. And , although he doesn't use magic as his weapon, he sure can kick some terrifying vampire butt.
Pair that with your two best buds Paul and Sid, throw a feisty girl in for good measure, a couple of school bully's and a mysterious teacher to boot and you have the makings of a worthwhile book. Sid, by the way, is one of my favorite characters. He knows more about vampires than even me. No small feat. ;)
Some of Alex's thoughts made me smile. There are a couple that I wanted to repeat. The first is a Lone Ranger reference. Gotta love that!
"Silver" Alex repeated. In old movies, silver was for werewolves and the Lone Ranger, who when you got down to it could probably hunt werewolves really well."
The second just made me laugh...
"...for a moment his heart raced as he saw a tall rakish figure in the corner. He felt himself crouch and then realized it looked rakish because it was, in fact, a rake. Save your mad skills for the actual monsters, Alex."
Some of my favorite parts of this book are the history references referring back to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. How clever. I loved the historical possibilities. This just really added a nice element to the storyline for me.
Would I recommend this book? Yes. For both young adults and adults alike. Boys will especially enjoy it as it is a read of the non-sparkly variety and will give them something to sink their teeth into.
And, as for Alex Van Helsing's vampire hunting skills... Buffy would have been proud!
And now, Jason Henderson has created the second book in his Van Helsing series. This one is titled Alex Van Helsing: Voice of the Undead. I can't wait to read it!
